What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a metabolic syndrome [a disorder that affects the production of energy by human (or animal) cells] caused by the body's inability to produce enough (or any) insulin to regulate blood sugar or its inability to use insulin properly. This results in glucose remaining in the bloodstream, leading to high blood glucose (blood sugar) levels, which can develop into diabetes and other health complications, such as kidney, nerve, and heart diseases. Therefore, maintaining stable blood sugar levels is crucial for individuals with diabetes and can be achieved through a healthy diet, exercise, and appropriate medication.
Types of Diabetes
-
Type 1 diabetes: Type 1 diabetes usually occurs before adulthood (in children and adolescents) due to a congenital deficiency in insulin production. As a result, lifelong insulin injections are required to regulate blood sugar levels.
-
Type 2 diabetes: Type 2 diabetes primarily develops in middle-aged individuals, though younger people can also be affected. It is caused by bad lifestyle habits, such as an unhealthy diet and lack of exercise. Treatment options include maintaining a healthy diet, regular exercise, and medication.
-
Prediabetes: Before developing Type 2 diabetes, individuals may experience prediabetes, a condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet at diabetic levels. Thus, establishing good lifestyle habits at this stage can help improve conditions and prevent diabetes.
-
Gestational diabetes: Some women may develop gestational diabetes during pregnancy. Although this condition usually resolves after childbirth, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial, as it increases the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes in the future.
